When is the best time book a newborn session?

The best time to book your newborn photo session is during your second trimester or at least 4-6 weeks before due date. Due to the length of time a newborn photo session takes to complete, I only have a limited number of spaces available each month.  Therefore, please book early to avoid disappointment. We will provisionally book you in for a week after your due date, but once the baby has arrived we can confirm an exact date and time.

What is the best age to have a newborn session?

The best time for a newborn photo session is within the first 10 days; this way we capture your little one at their small newborn best.  However, we can create these images up to 21 days before the baby starts to become a lot more alert and awake.

How do I prepare my newborn?

We will want your newborn as sleepy as possible to accomplish those cute sleepy poses, so having your newborn with a full tummy is the best way to obtain this. The studio is based in my home and I want all my clients to see it as 'a home away from home' so you can feed, change and cuddle as much as you like to soothe and relax your baby. I will have plenty of refreshments and biscuits to ensure you remain hydrated and relaxed. I keep the studio nice and warm during the session to ensure the comfort of your newborn who may be photographed nude. This means family images are best taken first as the studio can feel rather warm to those of us who are clothed!

How long will the photo session be?

I allow 3-4 hours for newborn sessions. This may seem a long time but we need to allow for your baby to feed on demand, usually be cleaned a few times too and to be settled fully before taking more pictures. Knowing you have this time allocated means that you don't need to worry if your baby cries or is not 'performing' as the session will be completely baby-led.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Plenty of feed, whether that be breast or bottle and a dummy if you use one. I supply swaddle blankets and throws for the pictures, however, if you have a special toy or blanket you wish to include, please bring it along. I have a variety of wraps and knitted rompers for newborns so there’s no need to bring any clothing for baby unless it’s something special you want photographed. Same if you have any sentimental teddy, knitted hat etc by all means bring these along too and I will aim to incorporate into your pictures.

Do I include myself, partner and other siblings in the pictures?

Yes! I know that after giving birth you might not feel your best, but having even just a few family pictures will be treasured for years to come. I can work wonders with dark circles from sleepless nights and suggest flattering poses. Siblings are also welcome for a few pictures; please remember to have simple clothing for them. A playroom is available which your other children are welcome to use whilst pictures of your newborn are taken.  Alternatively,  Roath Park Recreation Ground is only 2 minutes walk if your partner would prefer to take them out.

If I am getting in the pictures, what do I wear?

I tell my clients to wear simple clothes and colours like white, creams, greys or light tones and to avoid bright colours. Also please make sure nail varnish is off or tidy as your hands will be featured in close-up images. Please can you avoid any tops with writing on them for you or the children, these don’t relate well in pictures and can be distracting in the images. No need to dress up, just dress comfortable, when in doubt bring a few options and we can decide in the studio.

Can you come to my home for newborn sessions?

Yes I offer home newborn photo sessions, you can still get many of the newborn pictures I can at the studio along with some more natural ones of your baby. This can be useful with multiple siblings who can relax/play between pictures in their home environment. Please feel free to have a look at my Newborn Home Photo Gallery for examples of pictures taken at clients homes and I’m happy to discuss with you which you feel would be best. Newborn Photoshoots at home are £210 (additional £30 for siblings)

How many images can I expect?`

For a newborn photo session you can expect around 40 plus images depending on the session. As you are purchasing full resolution digital images, these will be yours to reproduce for personal use (no commercial licence). This means you can upload digital images to social media, print/enlarge them or send to family and friends etc.

Are the images re-touched?

Yes I re-touch the images you will receive to the quality of the images on my website. Newborns, especially if they are overdue, can sometimes have mild flaky skin which I can digitally remove, in some cases this can be severe and we will discuss in the photo session what is realistic to be removed post production. Babies can also scram themselves, however, please advise if there are any birthmarks or blemishes you wish to remain unedited.

Do you offer any discount for repeat customers?

Yes! If you have had a photo session with me previously and book again for another milestone, another child or just updated images as your children grow, you will receive 10% off as well as a free framed image of your choice.

I also have a 'Recommend a Friend' offer; for any friend that you recommend who books a photo session you will receive a free framed image of your choice.
